Findings from the first year of a five year study of youth suicide in California are obtained by survey of 12-19 yr olds. Adolescents with suicidal thoughts or behaviors more often had friends who were also suicidal & more often had family problems. They were also more likely to have social problems & greater substance abuse & were more likely to turn to a friend for help, rather than to a parent. (RM)
