In this precis of his paper, the author reflects on Chinese culture & suicide, particularly, the influence of Confucius & the concept of eternal life as achieved through one’s offspring. Chinese culture teaches that each person should cherish himself; not do himself harm, & that suicidal behavior is unworthy. Compared to other countries, the suicide rate is low, apparently due to cultural attitudes, but suicide does exist, especially among young people. (GW)
