In this summary, the authors compare the phenomenon of suicide in 3 cultures with similar democratic political systems but very varied cultural beliefs: Japan, India & the USA. Religious, sociological & psychological aspects are discussed, as well as differences in rates. Findings include: a lower overall suicide rate in India; the rate for Japanese women is one of the highest in the world; & the most common methods used are firearms (USA), poisoning & drowning (Japanese), & hanging (India).(GW)
