The author discusses his observations with long-term group psychotherapy involving severely affected alcohol & drug dependents. There is a marked tendency for participants to fuse with other group members in an attempt to compensate for their narcissistic deficiency. This group dependence is not negative as it allows participants to remain free of alcohol & drugs, & to work through their emotional & cognitive crises with others. Also, group discussions with spouses may contribute to results.(GW)
