This article describes the multiple developmental, socio-cultural, & psychological causes of youth suicide. The author notes that no single factor or cluster of factors is highly predictive of suicide with 2 possible exceptions: a history of attempts & a strong feeling of hopelessness. He also identifies the warning signs e.g. talk of suicide, substance abuse & sexual promiscuity, & suggests ways in which the therapist can improve his interaction with suicidal youth. (GW)
