Alberta has one of the highest suicide rates in Canada; youth suicide accounts for almost 10%, & for each youngster who succeeds, there may be up to 100 attempts & 300 parasuicides. This article describes the Calgary School Board’s new suicide prevention program. It will work closely with community agencies, educate students about suicide, provide staff with the knowledge & skills needed to identify & help suicidal students, & develop school procedures for dealing with a sudden death.
