The author discusses the often shattering effect of a suicidal death on the survivors: massive guilt, disturbed self-concept, rage, reality distortion, depression, a search for meaning, stigma & rejection by others, disturbed family relations; the factors contributing to a positive or negative bereavement outcome; the need for nurses to be aware of the potential effects of a suicide & to assume an active role in facilitating health in survivors, as well as the need for further research.
