This article discusses crisis intervention as a valuable technique for suicide prevention in the acute care hospital setting; the 6 essential steps in the crisis intervention model of problem solving through which the nurse assists the client; the importance of considering factors known to represent an increased potential for suicide e.g. history of psychiatric illness, alcoholism, hopelessness, in assessing the patient; the multiple roles of the nurse: resource person, teacher & family liason.
