As part of an effort to measure grief, a 58 item questionnaire was completed by 211 subjects who had lost a loved one to death. Long after the immediate grief period, most bereaved individuals felt upset, empty or tearful; many experienced anniversary reactions &/or physical symptoms. Although acute dysphoria peaked between 1 & 2 yrs, several grief-related feelings, symptoms & behaviors continued indefinitely. The relevance of the present work & directions for future studies are discussed.
