Sri Lanka has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world (29 per 100,000 population in 1980). Suicide is especially frequent among young adults, both male & female. Compared to the USA, the suicide rate for males age 15-24 years in Sri Lanka is nearly four times greater; the female rate nearly 13 times higher. The most common method of suicide is ingestion of liquid pesticides. (7 refs.)
