Awareness of suicide risk factors, such as depression, substance abuse & schizophrenia, may facilitate prevention. Direct questioning reveals suicidal vulnerability. Psychiatric consultation is indicated for clear self-injury risks. Hospitalization is usually recommended for the socially isolated presenting with overt suicidal ideation, with complications. Family involvement, a no suicide contract & outpatient follow-up may suffice for mild or transient ideation without manifest intent to die.
