In this letter, it is asked whether the “epidemic model” of suicide is an appropriate concept for describing, for example, incidence trends in the general population or the timing of three suicide attempts in a psychiatric hospital. The implications of labelling an increase in suicide rates or suicide clusters as epidemics are discussed. Rather, is is said that clinicians need to recognize individual vulnerability brought about by developmental phases in adolescence & life changes in adulthood.
