Physical illnesses are a risk factor for suicide. Physicians are dealing with a high risk population. This article reviews the evidence that points to the association between specific illnesses, such as peptic ulcer and cancer, and suicide. Risk factors associated with suicide in medical-surgical hospitals are reviewed. Management of suicidal patients is considered. Suicide in relationship to medical procedures is discussed.
