Discusses the high amount of stress encountered by physicians, citing the high degree of responsibility, changes in the public view of doctors, lack of positive feedback, and busy schedules as important factors. It is noted that the rates of suicide, substance abuse, and some illnesses are higher for physicians than for the general population. A list of early signs of stress & impairment is presented, & suggestions for stress management. (29 ref.)
