It appears that the reduced toxicity of car exhaust has led to a decrease in accidental poisonings (698 in 1968 to 511 in 1984, Pearson correlation=-0.70). Suicides, in contrast, have shown a slight increase (1913 in 1968 to 2210 in 1984, correlation=+0.27), however, the percentage of suicides using car exhaust declined from 9.0% in 1968 to 7.5% in 1984.
