This study examines 180 patients with DSM-III borderline personality disorder. It was found that patients with concurrent affective and substance use disorder had a higher rate of serious suicide attempts than other patients. It is suggested that clinicians should be alerted to Axis I disorders in assessing suicide potential in borderline patients. (9 ref.)
