Reviews principles for assessing, intervening in, & treating adolescent drug abuse. Specific principles are suggested for dealing with medical complications, & psychiatric complications including depression, suicide, acute panic, & psychosis. Central nervous system depressants commonly lead to major depression & attempted suicide. Suicidal ideation should be assessed for any adolescent with drug problems, & medications should be given in small amounts that can’t be used in attempts. (37 refs) RM
