The author comments on 3 essential prerequisites for psychodynamic psychotherapy of suicidal patients: a psychodynamic understanding, a psychotherapeutic attitude & a psychotherapeutic method. The importance of identifying a therapist’s countertransference reactions is emphasized, as is the need for full, honest & direct communication about suicidal intentions & risks. Post mortem work after a successful suicide must include fellow patients, staff members & family. (12 refs)
