This article examines the difficulty of estimating the number of suicides in prison populations. The article cites the suicide rates for the United Kingdom and the United States. The article reports that suicide rates are roughly the same from 1978-1979 in United States penitentiaries as they were for 1979-1983. However, the author notes that these suicide rates are lower than those for prisoners on death row. (5 refs.) (AK)
