The author examines the epidemiology of suicide among Jews in Israel. The code of Jewish law absolutely forbids suicide, & Orthodox burial rites are not performed for those who take their own life. The outstanding features of Israeli suicides are the high proportion of female to male deaths (males only 1.3 times that of the females for the period 1949-66), the high rates among Eastern European Jews, & the method of burning used by women.
