The author claims that presently there is widespread acceptance of a deterministic rather than a free-will model of suicide in our culture. Suicide is increasingly seen as an action related to personality disorders & mental illness rather than social determinants or free will. Ready acceptance of this is cited as the increasing rate of suicide, the high esteem society has for experts, & the desire for absolution by family & friends of the victim. (NBB)
