Sainsbury states community psychiatry is concerned with the development of an appropriate organization to provide for the early recognition, treatment, aftercare, & wherever possible, prevention of mental illness of a community. He discusses a common criticism of community care related to suicide–that the at-risk patient is deprived of the expert surveillance & protection against self-injury that a hospital affords. Methods of preventing self-destructive behavior in the community are presented.
