The psychosocial impact of AIDS follows the situational distress model of crisis, transitional state (in which distress & confusion may lead to suicidal considerations), & deficiency state (acceptance modified by repeated crises). Many patients decide that suicide would be preferable to total dependence on others. Additional problems are caused by intensified prejudice against homosexual men & drug addicts, which has caused patients to commit suicide rather than having their illness exposed.
