This controlled study of attempted suicide was conducted in general practice population attached to 1 service, & totalled 50 suicide survivors (0.71% of a 7000 member population). 32 were female, 18 were male. These patients were found to attend an average of 4 more yearly visits than the control group. Most had consulted their doctor within the month preceeding the event. Estimates of the number of attempts based on hospital samples may miss 1/5 to 1/3 of the cases. (NBB)
