This study reports on a cohort of 389 adult inpatients (252 females, 137 males, aged 20-79) admitted to the psychiatric unit of a Durban hospital following suicide attempts. Research data was obtained through clinical assessments, questionnaires & rating scales. Significant findings were: a lowering of average age in attempts & an increase in numbers in the 20-29 year age range; a large number presenting with both distress behavior & suicidal behavior that appeared to increase impulsivity.
