This study involves a total of 54 Indian patients (aged 12-20) who had attempted suicide in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (1985-1986). Data was obtained by interview & mental status examination. Most were female (79.6%) & between the ages of 16 & 19, & 90.7% had overdosed on drugs. The most frequent reason for the attempt was given as conflict over parental restrictiveness. Parental education & the need to be made aware of the role of authoritarianism in precipitating stress is emphasized.
