This study attempts to delineate the characteristics of 93 New York City policemen, who committed suicide during the period 1934-1940. The study is based on research commissioned by the mayor, who initiated reforms in the NYPD following his election in 1933. The highest rates of suicide occurred between 1934-1939. This comprehensive study includes a historical background, statistical data, a description of the men, precipitating factors & case histories. (NBB)
