The California Department of Mental Health researched suicide in persons under age 20 in 1986. Findings are based on 68 coroners records & include: 5 times as many victims were male than female & violent methods were most common. 4 profiles were distinguished: depressed/withdrawn, aggressive/impulsive, major mental disorders & “normal”. Surveys on youths revealed major causal areas, percentage of attempters & reticence to ask for help. Experts emphasized the need for education, training & networking. (KM)
