Mortality in Severe Depression: A Prospective Study Including 103 Suicides

Rated 506 male & 700 female inpatients with severe depression/melancholia at discharge during 1956-69. They were followed-up until Dec. 31/83. Some results: in uni- & bipolars, there was an increased mortality from physical disorders & suicide, but suicide frequency was lower in bipolars. Male suicides had higher initial ratings for the items brittle, sensitive, marital problems, acute onset & lower psychomotor retardation than other men.
