The rate of car exhaust suicides in the US declined following the introduction of emission controls in the mid-’60s. In Britain, where emission controls have not been introduced, the rate, initially much lower than in the US, has greatly increased since the beginning of the 1970s & is now about double that of the US. This may be explained by increased knowledge of the method, not by an increased number of cars. More research is needed into the nature of the opportunity structure for suicide.
