Most of the 28,000 people who commit suicide in the US annually, have contacted a physician 6 months prior to death. Recognition & management of affective disorders & alcoholism, 2 conditions frequently associated with suicide, will prevent many suicides. Hospitalized patients seem to be at high risk–particularly “accident” vicims. Verbal & behavioral warning signs & recommendations to the physician are discussed.
