This article criticizes the child welfare system in Alberta. It presents the case of Richard Cardinal, an aboriginal youth who died by suicide after 13 years in the child welfare system. A copy of Richard’s autobiography, written immediately prior to his suicide is included. In it, he recounts his life in the welfare system, the families he stayed with & his attempt to get help for his depression & suicidal thoughts. The article concludes with criticisms of the handling of his case & possible policy changes for suicide prevention in the Alberta child welfare system. (8 refs) (SC)
