Patients with respiratory & cardiac disease who committed suicide while in veterans hospitals were compared to matched controls. A number of personality & behavior items significantly differentiated the two groups. The suicides seemed more emotionally disturbed, had poorer relationships with hospital staff & family, & were seen as problem patients. A behaviour pattern which emerged was tentatively named the “dependence-dissatisfaction” pattern. Prevention suggestions are offered.
