In an attempt to reduce suicide by selecting groups at more risk, this study analyses the evolution of suicide rates in Portugal, district & city of Lisbon from 1950 to 1983. From the 1960’s on, there has been a significant decrease in male rates and a rise for females. Results list high risk groups in descending order: males over 40 & 20-29 year olds, widows or divorced, in spring & summer; females over 50 & 15-39 year old divorced or widowers, spring & summer.
