This article analyses cultural attitudes toward suicide. It includes descriptions of several cultures in which social status dictates whether suicide is acceptable & what method is suitable. Indirect suicides (such as taking great risks in order to be killed in battle), the stipulations for theses suicides & the cultural views that facilitate them are discussed. (42 refs) (SC)
