Using a case study as a context, guidelines for psychotherapy with suicidal patients are presented. Each guideline is illustrated with material from the case of a patient who eventually committed suicide during the course of therapy. Potential theapist reactions to the suicide of their patient are described with recommendations about those strategies that are helpful in the reparative process following the suicide and cautions about those responses that are least helpful.
