While many factors in suicidal behavior are present in both the white & the black populations, some are unique to the black population. Among these are effects of upward mobility & black cultural expectations for males, which include repression of feelings & strict obedience to parents and elders. Also, some blacks may find it difficult to identify with their race. Gangs & drug abuse also contribute to the problem. Poverty & racism can cause depression, a known factor in suicide.
