The results of studies on attempted suicides identified factors associated with greater risk of suicide. Findings of retrospective studies of completers are presented. In prospective studies, attention was directed towards psychosocial field & situational variables. Studies of psychological autopsies & attempts to eliminate rater bias are included. Psychodynamic theories on suicide were considered. (KM)
