A comparison study to determine perceived differences in family functioning was conducted in a sample of adolescents who had demonstrated suicidal behavior (n=20), who were emotionally disturbed but nonsuicidal (n=20), and who were nonproblematic (n=21). Significant differences were found in emotional cohesion, external support, and hoplessness as a function of adolescent mental status between the suicidal and the emotionally disturbed/nonsuicidal groups.
