Presents results of interviws with over 600 men and women in prison about the effects of incarceration, types of coping and stress that occur in prison life, and the nature of self-destructive acts that often result. The question of whether inmates who injure themselves are typical, the differences in risk and themes of coping, and experiences and effects of drugs are analyzed, and detailed case histories of men who ended their lives in prison are presented.
