The depression often experienced by hemodialysis patients who survive under precarious circumstances & must confront profound changes in lifestyle & psycho-social-sexual functioning is discussed in this article. It is emphasized that careful differential diagnosis & vigorous treatment are essential in optimizing quality of life & suggests that intervention should include both antidepressant drugs & psychotherapy with patient & family.
