Practitioners in psychiatry and allied fields have focused much effort on developing techniques for the early recognition and treatment of psychiatric illness (commonly known as “mental disturbances” or “emotional disorders”). Certain basic principles have emerged from this work, knowledge of which may help clients, their families, and others to cope more effectively and less fearfully with psychiatric illness.
