Presents a general survey of patterns & variations in suicide rates for 38 countries. A number of demographic variables are considered with the conclusion that differences in suicide rates are extremely variable. Therefore no theory can adequately explain variation in the suicide rate in terms of single classifications like marital status, urbanization, religion, age, etc. The common denominator of suicide, if it exists, appears unrelated to conventional sociological concepts or distinctions.
