Reviews evidence for a relationship between serotonin & attempted or completed suicide. Results include evidence for a relationship between low CSF concentrations of the serotonin metabolite 5-HIAA & an increased incidence of suicide attempts in psychiatric patients, & a possible association between low concentrations of the dopamine metabolite HVA & suicide attempts. Both markers have been associated with an increased frequency of ultimate suicide but more research is needed. (135 refs.) (LH)
