This study presents information on suicide rates in Norwegian psychiatric hospitals on a nationwide basis through the last 40 years. Rates for various periods are presented & it is noted that marked increases have occurred since the introduction of neuroleptics, antidepressive drugs, milieu therapy, & open door policy in treatment programs. Explanations for the increase are discussed & it is suggested that more effort is required in suicide prevention programs in psychiatric hospitals. (LH)
