Abstract
Application of Pao’s Theories to a Case Study of the Use and Misuse of Medication
Feinsilver D B
This article presents the case of a schizophrenic inpatient to illustrate Ping-Nie Pao’s (1979) changing beliefs about the use of drugs in the psychotherapy of schizophrenics. It describes what happens to a 26 year old subject who, after attempting suicide (she believed she had a penis), reached an impass in psychotherapy, and was administered stelazine (trifluooperazine HC1). The medication allowed an elaboration of the subject’s transference psychosis and a willingness to reflect.
