This study compared the mortality of different groups of alcoholics in Iceland with the mortality of the country’s male population aged 15 years & over. Age specific, general & cause-specific mortality are investigated, & various factors in these deaths are evaluated. In some 3000 alcoholics followed up from 4-24 years after contact with a treatment facility, the death rate was more than double the expected rate; rates of death due to accidents were 4 times the expected rates. 35 Refs.
