The article reviews the historical evolution of attitudes toward self-destruction. Various philosophical, ethical & religious views are traced through the centuries. The author suggests that it is difficult to exercise good judgement regarding suicide intervention if suicide is approached with absolutist views, whether psychiatric, legal, or moral. 25 Refs. (LH)
