This study compared clinical diagnoses of depression made according to Feighner’s research diagnostic criteria or DSM III with the categorisations obtained by the Levine-Pilowsky depression questionnaire (LPD). 51 patients were studied & comparison of the clinical diagnoses with questionnaire data suggests that the LPD is overinclusive & not as specific as clinical diagnosis. Alcohol & substance abuse were found to be an important concomitant of attempted suicide. 14 Refs. (LH)
