Understanding suicide depends on what aspects of the phenomenon are being scrutinized, what instruments are used to make observations, & the purposes of the observing individual. With these factors in mind, recent advances in suicidology are discussed with reference to demography, assessment of suicidal behaviours, intention, lifestyle, circumstance, prevention & intervention.
